THE THIRD DIMENSION
JUST A WORD
By Mandy
Sometimes the true origins of a word or phrase etc can be quite
strange and interesting. Here are a few that I have come across
from time to time.
WYSIWYG - A salesman once told me that a certain word processor
on the Amiga gave a wysiwyg layout. I was intrigued and asked
him what he meant. I was told that it means, what you see is
what you get!
JUGGERNAUT - This is a Hindu God. The name literally means Lord
of the World. His temple is at Purl in India and he is regarded
as a remover of sin. His statue is 45 feet high and is kept in a
temple but on certain festivals it is taken out and dragged in a
huge wagon, through the streets. Fanatics were reputed to throw
themselves under the wheels and be killed. Hence the word became
synonymous with a relentless force, crushing everything in its
path.
ROBOT - This comes from the Czech word for slave - Robotnik. It
was shortened by the Czech dramatist, Karl Capek for his play
R.U.R. (Rossum`s Universal Robots). It was translated into
English in 1923.
HOODLUMS - In San Francisco, there was a gang leader by the name
of Muldoon. A reporter on a local paper was looking for a word
to describe young toughs and he reversed the name to Noodlums.
Unfortunately his writing wasn`t too clear and it was misprinted
and so the work hoodlums was born.
HOOLIGANS - this appeared in London some years later, named after
a wild family of Houlihans, who became notorious for their
riotous living.
ATARI ST - The ST simply stands for sixteen-thirty two as the ST
has a 16 bit processor, emulating 32 bit. Hence 16/32.
AMSTRAD - Apparantly this is derived from Alan M Sugar TRADing
AMIGA - This is the spanish word for girlfriend.
